Poole’s Lewis-Manning Hospice, a charity which provides free care and support to people with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses is appealing to the public to donate good quality items to its ten charity shops.

Last year, the hospice’s charity shops were targeted in a spate of robberies with over £1000 of donated good being stolen in the run up to Christmas and they have recently seen a decline in donations of stock.

The shops located in Ashley Cross, Blandford, Broadstone, Ferndown, Parkstone, Poole, Westbourne, Winton and Wimborne bring in around a third of the charity’s income. They receive a third of their funding from Bournemouth and Poole PCT, and the remainder of their income comes from fundraising initiatives, community donations and legacies.

Rob Matthews, Lewis-Manning Hospice’s Retail Manager said: “In order to continue providing free care to local people we have to continue to raise money through our charity shops. Our shops are mainly staffed by volunteers, and we appreciate how generous our regular supporters have been when donating items for us to sell, but we have seen a recent decline in high quality items being sent to us.”

He added: “We are now appealing for even more people to donate their ‘once-loved’ items, so we can be sure that we find a good home for them and that the money is put back into caring for the community.”

The charity is particularly looking for high quality clothing, DVDs, electrical items and furniture. Please take your items to any of the 10 charity shops, addresses can be found on www.lewis-manning.co.uk.

Lewis-Manning Hospice celebrates its 20th year this year and is also weeks away from re-opening at its Evening Hill grounds in Lilliput. They will eventually care for around 1,200 people annually but more than £1.6million is still needed to meet the rebuilt costs. Visit www.lewis-manning.co.uk to make a donation.
