The Institute of Directors calls on MPs from all parties to support much-needed reform of the Employment Tribunal system in the House of Commons tomorrow (13th March). The Government’s plan to extend the qualification period for Unfair Dismissal rights from one year to two is a vital change, says Simon Walker, Director General of the IoD:
“Businesses are clear that Unfair Dismissal makes them think twice about employing people. 46% of IoD members told us that they would be more likely to take on an additional member of staff if the Unfair Dismissal qualification period was extended to two years.
“We would like to see acknowledgement from all parties that we’ve become ‘lop-sided’ on the subject of employment protections: well-intended protections for those in work invariably come at the cost of those without work.”
MPs will also be voting on plans to reduce the number of judges required for Unfair Dismissal hearings from three to one. The desire to reduce the cost of the system is understandable, and the IoD supports the Government’s change, with the use of a single Judge agreed by both the claimant and the defendant.
