Responding to the Education Secretary Michael Gove’s plans to give leading universities power over A-level standards, Simon Walker, Director General of the Institute of Directors, said:
“This is a positive step that, in combination with other reforms, should help to underpin the academic gold standard that A-levels represent. Universities are uniquely well placed to advise on any shortcomings in current A-level programmes and gaps in students’ knowledge. Greater university involvement in overseeing A-levels will help to shore up public confidence in the qualifications system. This reform will help to reassure employers, too – a world class education system is vital to the UK’s long term economic competitiveness.”
