Young people in the local area are being invited to show off their photography skills in association with the Boscombe Community Interest Company and a Sovereign Shopping Centre Photography Exhibition. The project is launching on Saturday 18 August in the Centre’s Community Youth Project Shop from 1pm until 3pm.
The Photography Exhibition is providing an opportunity to engage young people, aged 13-19, with the local area regeneration and giving them a voice within the community. The project is asking the young people to use their skills and showcase their talent through a great photograph of Boscombe, which could then be chosen to be printed onto canvas and displayed in the Community Youth Project Shop, local guest houses and restaurants in the area.
Those that wish to enter the Photography Exhibition must submit a photo by Saturday 8 September. All images will be on display in the Community Youth Project Shop and 25 optimum shots will be chosen by the local community, which will include visitors to the Centre, schools and local people, and printed onto canvas by DPI Photography, which is also located in the Sovereign Shopping Centre.
All photographs submitted will be on display from this Saturday in the Community Youth Project Shop for all to view. The winning shots will then be showcased on canvas in the Sovereign Shopping Centre in September and will be able to be purchased with 50 per cent of the profits going to the young people that submitted the photos, and the other 50 per cent funding the project for 2013.
The Photography Exhibition initiative has been set up by the Community Youth Project Shop, in the Sovereign Shopping Centre, and mentors and volunteers involved include students studying photography, Bournemouth Youth Service and Young Enterprise.
Clare Belmont, Manager of the Community Youth Project Shop, said: “We are aiming to inspire young people in the area and encourage future qualifications, personal development and business networking. It is an exciting opportunity to engage young people with their local area and highlight the positive aspects of Boscombe, while engaging with the local regeneration groups and businesses. Everyone involved with the project is really looking forward to seeing what talent and skills are out there.”
The Community Youth Project Shop was established to provide a central facility as a way of engaging young people into the regeneration of Boscombe. It offers support, advice, guidance, business advice and creative workshops with partner groups, which includes Bournemouth Integrated Youth Service, Young Enterprise, YMCA, Creative Kids, Guidance For Youth and many other children and young people’s services in and around Boscombe.
Young people that wish to enter the Photography Exhibition can submit their photos to Clare in the Community Youth Project Shop every Saturday from 1pm until 3pm or they can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. The closing date is 3pm on Saturday 8 September.
