…make it a short but challenging walk along the South West Coast Path at Heddon’s Mouth in Exmoor, Devon, taking in steep-sided valleys and ancient woodland ablaze with rich autumn colour and, of course, spectacular sea views.
Autumn is a particularly good time to visit Exmoor: the coastal headline is carpeted in purple low-growing heather and there’s plenty of wildlife to see, from rutting deer to sea birds such as guillemots, razorbills and peregrine falcons, whose 120-mile-an-hour plunge after prey is a rare but spectacular sight. And then when you’ve finished your walk, you can pause for a while at the Hunter’s Inn – the perfect spot for some lunch and a well-earned rest!
